Gambling: Warning Signs

Ask Yourself the Following Questions...

Do you or does someone you love ever...

  • Become increasingly obsessed with the idea of gambling?
  • Think that no win is ever beg enough?
  • Take time off work to gamble?
  • Gamble more to win back losses?
  • Borrow money to gamble?
  • Promise to quite gambling after the next bet or big win?
  • Become hooked on the high of gambling?
  • Act restless and irritable when no gambling?
  • Gamble more often or with more than was intended?
  • Lost interest in normal activities?
  • Lose track of time and miss important appointments or family celebrations to gamble?
  • Neglect family and friends in order to gamble?
  • Use gambling as a way to escape life's problems?
  • Lie about losses and exaggerate wins?
  • Bet until the last dollar is gone?

Teen Gambling Warning Signs

  • Unexplained need for money
  • Valuables and money missing from home
  • Frequent cards/dice games at home
  • Missing school/social gatherings
  • Excessive and intensive tv sport watching
  • Interest in periodicals reporting sports results
  • Carrying large amounts of cash
  • Short, late-night phone calls
  • Secrecy
  • Gambling paraphernalia (betting slips, lottery tickets)
  • Sells prized possessions
  • Drop in grades and loss of non-gambling friends
  • May become addicted to alcohol or other drugs

If you answered "yes" to even some of these questions, then gambling may have become a problem.
