Gambling: Types of Gamblers

Social Gambler

Most gamblers are social gamblers. They are able to decide on a loss limit ahead of time and stick to it.

Serious Social Gambler

These gamblers gamble regularly, but they are able to quit without showing signs of withdrawal or irritability.

"At-Risk" Gambler

This can mean people who fit certain characteristics. For instance, studies show that adolescent boys who cut school or smoke cigarettes have a higher incidence of gambling behaviors. They are "at risk" for gambling problems because others with similar characteristics gamble at a higher rate than that of the general population.

Problem Gamber

A person who is experiencing problems because of gambling that's effecting finances, life-style, family, marriage, work and significant others.

Compulsive Gambler

A person who knows they have problems related to gambling that effect many areas of their lives yet do not curb the urge or the impulse and gamble anyway.

Pathological Gambler

Consistently do 5 of the following 10 behaviors:
  1. Are preoccupied with gambling
  2. Increase the amount of money they gamble
  3. Have unsuccessfully tried several times to quit
  4. Are irritable when they try to quit
  5. Use Gambling to escape problems
  6. Try to win back loses
  7. Lie to conceal gambling
  8. Committ illegal acts to finance gambling
  9. Risk losing significant others or job to gamble
  10. Rely on others to finance their gambling
